The Reservists Party, led by former communications minister Yoaz Hendel, has unveiled a national post-trauma recovery plan ahead of upcoming elections, aimed at addressing widespread psychological trauma following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and the subsequent war. The initiative, titled 'returning from the battlefield,' was developed with mental health professionals, experts supporting disabled veterans, and combat soldiers experiencing post-traumatic stress.
Central to the proposal is legislation to establish a dedicated rehabilitation fund with an annual budget of approximately 1 billion shekels. The plan also calls for a ministerial committee to oversee care for physically and mentally wounded service members, a 'big brother' support program offering emotional and legal assistance, mandatory resilience workshops during reserve duty, academic accommodations, employment reintegration support, regulation of legal fees, and the creation of a council for nonprofit organizations בתחום trauma care.
Hendel described caring for returning soldiers as a national mission, stressing that many are unable to resume normal life after prolonged and intense combat. Party members and supporters, including wounded veterans and bereaved families, urged the government to adopt the plan, arguing that the state has a responsibility to support those it sent into battle and that the scale of national trauma is unprecedented.
