A Russian cargo ship that sank off the coast of Spain in late 2024 may have been transporting nuclear submarine reactor components intended for North Korea, according to a report by a United States broadcaster. The vessel, the Ursa Major, went down in the Mediterranean Sea after a series of explosions in December.
Officially, the ship was listed as carrying cranes and manhole covers to Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East. However, satellite imagery, findings from Spanish investigators, and testimony from crew members suggest the cargo may have included two nuclear reactors designed for submarine propulsion.
If confirmed, the shipment would point to deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, raising concerns about the transfer of sensitive nuclear technology and the broader security implications for Europe and East Asia.
