The United Kingdom has committed significant military resources to a multinational mission aimed at protecting international shipping and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Defense Minister John Healey announced the move during a virtual meeting of defense leaders, describing it as part of a coordinated effort to restore maritime stability amid ongoing Iranian interference.
The strategic waterway, responsible for roughly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, has been under Iranian control for months. Tehran's actions are widely viewed as retaliation for military operations by the United States and Israel, as well as a continuing American blockade of Iranian ports.
Britain's contribution includes drone boats, autonomous mine-clearing systems, and Typhoon fighter jets for air patrols. An air defense destroyer is en route to the region, while another support vessel is being upgraded for potential deployment. The operation is supported by 115 million pounds in new funding focused on counter-drone and mine-hunting capabilities.
