Amjad Khan, best remembered for playing the feared Gabbar Singh in 'Sholay', died in 1992 leaving behind unpaid dues of Rs 1.27 crore from several filmmakers. At the time, the Hindi film industry was heavily influenced by criminal networks that often threatened or financed film projects. Shortly after his death, a gangster from the Middle East contacted Khan’s family, offering to recover the outstanding money on their behalf.
According to his son Shadaab Khan, the unpaid amount was documented through official payment letters from producers. While Khan had forgiven debts owed by those genuinely struggling, the remaining sum was due from financially stable producers who never stepped forward to settle their dues. Despite the significant value of the amount at the time, none of them repaid the family.
Khan’s widow firmly refused the underworld’s offer of help, saying her husband had never taken favors from them and she would not begin after his passing. She chose not to pursue the money out of self respect and faith, saying that God would take care of the family. The matter ended there, and she later started her own business to support her family.
