A follow-up discussion in the Knesset Economics Committee revealed severe shortcomings in the enforcement of laws regulating electric bicycles and scooters. Although regulations require riders to use roads instead of sidewalks, carry license plates, and meet minimum age and testing requirements, officials acknowledged that enforcement is largely absent.
Data presented during the session showed a sharp rise in injuries in recent years, alongside widespread underage riding and unsafe use on sidewalks. Significant disparities were found between municipalities, with some cities carrying out no enforcement at all and others applying rules only partially.
Participants also highlighted poor coordination between government ministries, police, and local authorities, which they said undermines efforts to reduce accidents. The committee chair warned that the issue is a matter of life and death and called for a comprehensive and coordinated plan to strengthen enforcement and improve public safety.
