Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei described Iran's conflict with the United States and Israel in ideological and religious terms, referring to it as a 'Sacred Defense' against what he called an American and Zionist invasion. In a series of posts on X, he portrayed Iran as emerging as a major and influential power through the confrontation.
A counterterrorism analyst from George Washington University said the language amounts to a declaration of 'jihad,' or sacred religious war, carrying deep religious significance in Shia Islamic jurisprudence. By framing the conflict in this way, the analyst argued, Khamenei is casting the struggle as a religious obligation rather than a geopolitical dispute.
The messaging also explicitly identifies America and Jews as central adversaries, reflecting longstanding ideological themes within Iran's leadership. In a separate post, Khamenei called for population growth as part of building a new Islamic-Iranian civilization.
The analyst noted the irony that Khamenei is communicating through X, a platform restricted within Iran, while the country experiences a prolonged internet blackout that has imposed significant economic costs on ordinary citizens.
