Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed reportedly deleted a 2019 Thanksgiving social media post calling for reparations for Indigenous people. In the post, he wrote that the country was built on the systematic annihilation of Indigenous peoples and said the nation owed more than thanks, adding that it was time for reparations. He later clarified wording in a follow-up message.
Video from a Michigan outlet also shows El-Sayed expressing support for reparations for Black and Indigenous people, saying the country needs to invest in and have a broader conversation about the issue. His campaign did not respond to a request for comment about the deleted post.
El-Sayed has faced additional scrutiny over past social media posts supporting the movement to defund police, as well as other controversies during his campaign. He has also been accused of exaggerating his medical credentials and has drawn criticism for past remarks and associations involving progressive activists and commentary on international conflicts.
