Slovenia has elected Janez Janša as its new prime minister, a leader viewed as supportive of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. In a recent joint video message with Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan, Janša sent greetings to the residents of Judea and Samaria, wishing them peace, growth, and a happy life.
His election marks a notable shift for Slovenia, which last year recognized a Palestinian state and imposed a ban on imports from Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, as well as restrictions on arms trade with Israel. Slovenia also became the first European country to implement an official boycott of this kind and recently had its public broadcaster boycott the Eurovision Song Contest over Israel's participation.
Janša and Dagan have maintained contact since meeting during Janša's visit to Israel more than a year ago. As coalition talks progressed in Slovenia, the two held a discreet meeting in Ljubljana to discuss future cooperation, underscoring what both sides describe as the strategic importance of the relationship.
With Hungary no longer positioned to block European Union sanctions related to Judea and Samaria, Janša's support is viewed by Israeli officials and regional leaders as strategically significant for Israel and for the communities in the area.
