Marxist political commentator Hasan Piker is pushing back against a federal inquiry into his recent trip to Cuba, calling it an intimidation tactic tied to his criticism of Israel and the United States. The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sent administrative subpoenas seeking documents related to the financial and logistical details of his March visit, which may have involved potential violations of sanctions laws.
During a livestream, Piker told followers that the trip had been cleared by federal authorities and described the investigation as politically motivated. He argued that the scrutiny stems less from the Cuba visit itself and more from his outspoken opposition to Israel and his efforts to support anti Israel political candidates.
Supporters, including activists associated with socialist and anti capitalist movements, framed the inquiry as an attempt to suppress dissenting voices critical of United States foreign policy. CodePink co founder Medea Benjamin, who also received a subpoena, defended the trip as a humanitarian effort to deliver medical supplies.
Critics, however, point to the legal questions surrounding travel and business dealings with the Cuban government. As the investigation unfolds, Piker has said he plans to retain legal counsel while continuing to portray the probe as part of a broader campaign against left wing activism.
