Africa Day reflections and voices from across generations
As Africa Day 2026 is commemorated, marking the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, the programme explores what it means to be African today. Three people from different generations — Generation X, millennials and Generation Z — share their perspectives on identity, opportunity and the continent’s future.
They reflect on the aspirations and challenges shaping modern Africa, from cultural pride and economic ambition to social change and global influence. Their contributions highlight both the diversity of experiences across the continent and a shared hope for progress.
The programme also hears from South African activists who have returned home after taking part in the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla. The group says they were intercepted and detained by Israeli soldiers while attempting to deliver aid, alleging mistreatment during their detention, claims that Israel denies.
