Mexico has agreed to host Iran during the 2026 World Cup after the United States declined to allow the team to stay in the country. President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government was approached by football's world governing body after American authorities indicated that Iran's squad would not be permitted to remain overnight in the United States.
Iran had originally been assigned a base in Tucson, Arizona, with all three of their group matches scheduled to take place in American cities. However, security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East created uncertainty around the arrangements.
Under the new plan, Iran will stay in Mexico while traveling to the United States for their matches against New Zealand in Los Angeles on 15 June, Belgium in Los Angeles on 21 June, and Egypt in Seattle on 26 June. The tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and Iran are currently preparing in Antalya, Turkey.
