'Freedoms are never free': A Jewish American soldier buried with Nazis finally laid to rest with US troops

Eighty years after his death in the Battle of Cherbourg, First Lieutenant Nathan Baskind, a Jewish American officer from Pittsburgh, was laid to rest at the Normandy American Cemetery in France. Baskind landed on Utah Beach during the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944 and was later killed after being ambushed and taken prisoner by German forces. He was buried in a mass grave alongside German soldiers, and for decades his family did not know his fate.

Postwar efforts to identify his remains were unsuccessful, and he was interred in a German war cemetery. Decades later, a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring Jewish American service members uncovered records suggesting Baskind had been buried there. With cooperation from officials in Germany, France, and the United States, the grave was reopened and remains were carefully exhumed. Advanced genetic testing confirmed a match with Baskind’s living relatives.

On the eightieth anniversary of his death, Baskind was reburied with full military honors under a Star of David, in accordance with Jewish tradition. His great-niece, who helped lead the effort, said the ceremony brought long-awaited closure to her family and honored her uncle’s sacrifice. German officials who assisted in the process described the reburial as a gesture of reconciliation and a reminder of the enduring human cost of war.
