'To preserve security & unity of people': Lebanon PM postpones US visit amid Israeli strikes

Lebanon's Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has postponed his planned visit to the United States and the United Nations, citing 'current internal circumstances' and the need to safeguard national security and unity. He said he would remain in Beirut to oversee government operations and protect the security of the Lebanese people amid escalating tensions.

The decision comes as Israeli strikes continue across Lebanon, killing at least 14 people in recent attacks and pushing the overall death toll close to 1,950, according to Lebanese officials. Pro-Hezbollah protests have erupted in Beirut, with demonstrators accusing Salam of aligning with Israel and burning his images.

Iran has warned Lebanon against sidelining Hezbollah in upcoming talks with Israel, cautioning that doing so could expose the country to 'irreparable security risks.' Tehran said it remains in close contact with Lebanese authorities to monitor ceasefire commitments, while Israel maintains that its operations against Hezbollah are separate from broader diplomatic efforts.

Although Salam has delayed his trip, talks between Lebanese and Israeli representatives are still expected to take place in Washington. However, ongoing hostilities, failed negotiations between the United States and Iran, and widening regional tensions have cast uncertainty over any immediate diplomatic breakthrough.
