Fertilizer supply concerns grow; govt warns against hoarding

Concerns over fertilizer supplies have intensified following the crisis in West Asia, prompting the state agriculture department to caution retailers and farmers against hoarding and panic buying ahead of the upcoming monsoon cropping season. With large-scale paddy cultivation set to begin in mid-June, along with maize and pulse crops in some districts, officials have urged careful management of existing stocks, particularly urea.

At a recent review meeting with fertilizer companies, dealers, and retailers from across the state, Agriculture Director Saurabh Suman Yadav said that 2.84 lakh metric tonnes of urea are currently available. He emphasized the need for proper verification of farmers' requirements before sales and encouraged the adoption of alternative fertilizers and organic farming to reduce dependence on chemical inputs.

The department has warned that strict action will be taken against hoarding and overpricing. Monitoring measures, including special inspection teams at the state and district levels, have been put in place to ensure fair distribution, while companies have been directed to maintain uninterrupted supply amid fears of import disruptions.
