Voting has begun in local elections across parts of the West Bank and in some areas of Gaza, with polls open from morning until evening and results expected over the weekend. The elections cover dozens of municipal and village councils, although many seats will be decided without a vote because only one faction or no candidates at all are standing.
Fatah is the only major faction contesting the الانتخابات and is assured victory in several districts. The field narrowed after groups objected to an election law requiring candidates to recognise the Palestinian Liberation Organisation as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and to accept its political programme. Hamas and other factions oppose the organisation, particularly over its recognition of Israel.
Local elections have not been held in the West Bank since 2022, and Gaza has not seen a vote of any kind in two decades. The الانتخابات take place against the backdrop of longstanding political division between Gaza and the West Bank, ongoing conflict and limited public confidence, though some residents say the vote offers a sign of democratic participation during a difficult period.
