Donald Trump has cancelled a planned visit by United States envoys to Pakistan for talks on the Iran war, shortly after Iran's delegation departed Islamabad. Trump said the trip by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would waste time, adding that if Iran wanted negotiations 'all they have to do is call'. The decision came despite a temporary extension of a ceasefire that had been set to expire on 22 April.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi met Pakistani officials during his visit, saying he had outlined Tehran's position on a framework to permanently end the war but questioned whether the United States was serious about diplomacy. Pakistan has been acting as a mediator in recent weeks, though earlier talks between senior officials ended without agreement.

Tensions remain high over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear ambitions. Iran has restricted passage through the strategic waterway following strikes by the United States and Israel earlier this year, while Washington has increased its naval presence in response. Meanwhile, violence has continued elsewhere in the region, with Israeli forces and Hezbollah exchanging fire despite a separate ceasefire agreement.
