Police in London have arrested a 47-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man in connection with an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in Finchley, north London. The two suspects were detained in Watford and remain in custody.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday when two individuals wearing dark clothing and balaclavas allegedly threw two bottles believed to contain petrol at the synagogue. The devices failed to ignite. Authorities are treating the case as an antisemitic hate crime and counter-terrorism detectives are supporting the investigation.
The attempted attack follows a series of recent antisemitic incidents in Britain, including an arson attack on ambulances operated by a Jewish charity in London and a deadly synagogue attack in Manchester in October 2025. Police said the swift arrests are intended to reassure the community and demonstrate the seriousness with which such crimes are handled.
