Secret Service trainee arrested after 'secretly filming his roommate'

A trainee with the United States Secret Service has been arrested in Georgia after allegedly using a hidden camera disguised as a phone charger to secretly record his roommate at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Joel Canvasser, 41, was charged with felony eavesdropping following a complaint from his fellow trainee, who reported weeks of suspicious behavior and disturbing anonymous text messages.

According to investigators, the alleged surveillance began after the roommate’s phone charger went missing and Canvasser offered a replacement. The device, plugged into a wall outlet with a clear view of the room, was later discovered to contain a hidden camera. The victim told police he began receiving messages that appeared to reference his private activities in real time, leading him to suspect he was being watched.

Authorities said the roommate eventually found a lens inside the charger after noticing a reflection. Evidence collected reportedly included photographs, text messages, a memory card and the disguised device. Canvasser’s security clearance and access to agency systems have been suspended as the case proceeds, and a senior official described the allegations as deeply troubling.
