Allies back Starmer as Mandelson and Epstein leave the UK leader...

Senior members of the British government have voiced support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he faces mounting pressure over his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. The controversy erupted after it was revealed that Mandelson had failed security vetting before his appointment, information Starmer says he was never told. The Foreign Office approved the appointment despite the recommendation, and its top civil servant has since resigned.

Opposition parties have called for Starmer to step down, arguing his position is untenable. Although the Labour Party holds a strong majority in Parliament, internal unease is growing amid poor poll ratings and anticipated losses in upcoming local elections. Some lawmakers fear changing leaders during a period of global instability, while others question Starmer’s judgment following a series of political setbacks.

Mandelson was dismissed in September 2025 after evidence emerged that he had misrepresented the extent of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. Newly released United States court documents indicated their association continued after Epstein’s 2008 conviction and suggested Mandelson shared sensitive government information. British police have arrested Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct in public office; he denies wrongdoing and has not been charged.
