A synagogue in north London was targeted in an attempted arson attack, marking the latest in a series of incidents against Jewish sites in the British capital. The Community Security Trust said the attack caused minor smoke damage to an internal room but no injuries or major structural harm. Similar incidents have recently been reported in Finchley, Golders Green and Hendon.
The attack follows other recent cases, including an attempted arson at a business linked to the Jewish community and the torching of ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer emergency service. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a previous synagogue attack and have increased patrols, deploying armed officers and counter terrorism resources.
A pro Iranian group calling itself the Movement of the Companions of the Right Hand of Islam has claimed responsibility for several of the incidents, including the Kenton attack, and posted a video online purporting to show it. Britain’s Chief Rabbi described the situation as a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community, while police said investigations are ongoing and acknowledged the concern felt by local residents.
