An Egyptian sports commentator working for the Qatar-based global network BeIN Sports sparked controversy after refusing to mention the name of Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz during a Football Association Cup semifinal broadcast. Ali Mohamed Ali announced at the start of the match that he would not say the goalkeeper’s name, adding that 'we all know why,' and instead referred to him indirectly throughout the game.
Peretz, who plays for Southampton, delivered a strong performance as his team sought to reach a major final and secure its first significant trophy in more than five decades. Southampton briefly took the lead late in the match, but Manchester City scored twice in quick succession to eliminate them from the competition.
The decision to avoid naming Peretz drew criticism, including from a spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy in the United Kingdom, who accused the commentator of discrimination and questioned why he was allowed to cover matches organized by England’s football authorities.
