Ukraine has summoned Israel's ambassador in Kyiv to protest a shipment of grain that it says was taken from Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory and delivered to the Israeli port of Haifa. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said the cargo was 'stolen' and that Israel had previously been informed in April about a similar shipment.
Sybiga stated that Ukraine had warned Israel against accepting such grain and expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of appropriate response. He cautioned that continued acceptance of the shipments could harm relations between the two countries.
Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected the public criticism, saying diplomatic matters should not be handled through social media. He said Ukraine had not provided evidence or requested legal assistance but added that the issue would be examined and stressed that Israel follows the rule of law.
The European Union said in 2024 that there was evidence Russia was illegally appropriating large volumes of grain from occupied Ukrainian territories and exporting them as Russian products. Russian forces currently control about one-fifth of Ukraine's territory.
