The Israel Defense Forces said it uncovered and destroyed two extensive Hezbollah attack tunnels in the southern Lebanon town of Qantara, built over more than a decade with direct guidance and funding from Iran. The military said the tunnels reached depths of about 25 meters and stretched a combined two kilometers, making them among the longest underground systems discovered in southern Lebanon.
According to the military, the tunnels were part of a broader underground network in nearby towns and were intended to support a planned assault on communities in the Galilee. Hundreds of operatives were meant to use the site as a staging ground, gathering weapons and equipment before launching attacks, though those plans were never carried out.
Troops located hidden entrances during an offensive roughly 10 kilometers from the Israeli border. Inside, they found stockpiles of weapons, living quarters with multiple rooms and bunk beds, and rocket launch shafts aimed toward Israel. The military said the tunnels were constructed to Iranian standards and were ultimately destroyed using 450 tons of explosives.
