Lithuanian authorities announced the arrest of nine people accused of plotting murders and sabotage across Europe on behalf of Russia's military intelligence service. The investigation began after Russian exile Ruslan Gabbasov discovered a tracking device hidden under his car in Lithuania, where he had sought asylum. Police later arrested an armed man outside his home who they say was preparing to kill him.
According to officials, the network carried out arson attacks on military equipment destined for Ukraine in Bulgaria and conducted surveillance of military sites in Greece. The suspects, who hold citizenship in several countries, are accused of acting in the interests of Russia's military intelligence agency. Lithuanian investigators said they uncovered direct links between those detained and the organizers of the alleged plots.
The case highlights what Western officials describe as an escalating campaign of sabotage by Russia across Europe, targeting countries that support Ukraine and Russian dissidents living abroad. Lithuanian authorities said multiple individuals were targeted for assassination as part of the operation.
Despite the arrests, Gabbasov said he believes the threat against him remains. He has continued his activism against the Kremlin, even after being sentenced in absentia in Russia and placed on a wanted list.
