Israel has released all but two pro-Palestinian activists detained after their aid flotilla bound for Gaza was intercepted in international waters near Crete. Around 175 activists aboard 22 boats were seized on Thursday, with the majority now disembarking on the Greek island of Crete ahead of arrangements to return to their home countries.
Israeli authorities said two men remain in custody and are being taken to Israel for questioning over suspected links to a terrorist organisation and alleged illegal activity. The flotilla’s organisers condemned the interception as unlawful and demanded the immediate release of the remaining detainees, while Israel described the voyage as a political stunt and said its naval blockade of Gaza is lawful under international law.
The incident has drawn international reaction, with Greece offering diplomatic assistance and other European leaders calling for the release of their citizens. The flotilla had set sail two weeks earlier with dozens of vessels aiming to challenge Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver aid, as humanitarian conditions in the territory remain severe amid the ongoing war triggered by the October 2023 attack by Hamas on southern Israel.
