Takeaways From The Times's Interview With Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson says he regrets supporting President Donald Trump after the administration joined Israel in attacking Iran, a decision he vehemently opposed. In an interview in Maine, Carlson described Trump as having a 'spellbinding' power over those around him and suggested the president felt compelled to follow Israel's lead. Carlson has since become a prominent critic of the administration on his podcast, arguing that the move toward war betrayed the anti-interventionist principles he once believed Trump upheld.

Carlson was particularly incensed by a social media post Trump made on Easter Sunday threatening Iran, which he called morally wrong and offensive to religious faith. He framed his criticism in spiritual terms, saying there are unseen forces influencing political events. Although he acknowledged he had harbored private doubts about Trump for years, he said he had previously rationalized them because of areas of agreement.

The former television host also addressed controversy over platforming white nationalist Nick Fuentes, saying he regretted the appearance because it distracted from larger issues. He harshly criticized Senator Ted Cruz and Ambassador Mike Huckabee for what he characterized as support for violence in Iran, while both men denied his claims.

Carlson expressed sympathy for Vice President Vance, describing him as caught in a difficult position because of his previously stated opposition to foreign wars. He warned that the Iran conflict could politically damage anyone associated with it, arguing that it is not beneficial for the United States.
