Spirit Airlines abruptly canceled all flights early Saturday and announced it was permanently shutting down, leaving passengers stranded across the country. The airline said it was 'winding down all operations' and told travelers not to go to the airport, catching many customers off guard as they scrambled to make alternative arrangements.
Passengers described chaotic scenes as they rushed to book last-minute flights, often at high prices or with long layovers. Ashley Owens, who was serving as maid of honor at a wedding in Las Vegas, had to cut her trip short after her return flight was canceled. Others, including international travelers, faced unexpected hotel stays and thousands of dollars in added expenses.
The budget carrier had struggled financially for years, filing for bankruptcy twice amid mounting losses, rising labor and maintenance costs, and intense competition in key markets. Plans to relaunch as a smaller operation collapsed as fuel prices surged in recent weeks.
Several airlines stepped in to offer discounted rescue fares, and Spirit said it would issue automatic refunds for tickets purchased directly. Still, many passengers reported difficulties securing full refunds, particularly for bookings made through third-party sites, and voiced frustration over the airline’s late-night announcement.
