Norway's top soccer official, Lise Klaveness, has called for the abolition of the Peace Prize awarded by the world governing body for soccer, arguing that honoring world leaders falls outside its mandate. She said such awards risk becoming political and could undermine the necessary distance between sports organizations and state leaders. Klaveness emphasized that selecting peace laureates requires independent institutions with clear criteria and significant resources, pointing to Norway's Nobel institute as better suited for the role.

Her comments follow the decision in December 2025 to award the inaugural Peace Prize to United States President Donald Trump. The award, created by the president of the global soccer body, was intended to recognize individuals who promote peace and unity. However, it drew criticism for being political and for lacking transparency in its nomination process.

Klaveness has previously voiced strong opinions on international governance issues within soccer, including calls to suspend Israel from European competition after Russia's exclusion. Her latest remarks come just days before the 2026 Congress of the world governing body for soccer in Vancouver, where member nations are set to make key decisions, including selecting the host of the 2031 Women's World Cup.
