Former United States president Barack Obama said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used the same arguments to persuade President Donald Trump to strike Iran as he had used during Obama’s time in office. Speaking to The New Yorker, Obama said he remained unconvinced that military action would effectively address the threats posed by Iran.
Obama argued that events following the strike support his earlier concerns, noting that the United States is still grappling with many of the same trade-offs that Trump criticized in the 2015 nuclear agreement. He suggested that while Netanyahu may have achieved his objective in influencing Trump, the long-term benefits of such action remain uncertain.
Questioning the broader consequences, Obama said he doubts the move is ultimately in the best interest of either the Israeli people or the United States. He added that there is a well-documented record of his disagreements with Netanyahu on these issues.
