A man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence following reports that he made antisemitic threats toward Jewish people in Salford. Police were called to Northumberland Street in Higher Broughton, an area at the heart of the city’s Jewish community, late on Wednesday evening.
Video shared on social media shows a man being confronted by members of the Orthodox Jewish community, who tell him that police are on their way. In the footage, the man appears to threaten violence. A separate clip shows him being detained and placed in handcuffs by an officer.
Marc Levy, chief executive of the Jewish Representative Council for Greater Manchester, described the incident as indicative of a wider surge in hate crime targeting Jewish people. He called for stronger government action to prevent radicalisation and praised the swift response of Greater Manchester Police. A senior officer said such behaviour would not be tolerated and confirmed the suspect remains in custody for questioning.
