Israel's attorney general has opposed the appointment of Major General Roman Gofman as the next head of the Mossad, urging the Supreme Court to block the nomination ahead of hearings on several petitions. The role is scheduled to change hands in June, following his selection by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The objection centers on a 2022 case in which a 17-year-old, Uri Elmakiyes, was secretly recruited by military officers at Gofman's request to conduct online information and influence activities targeting citizens of enemy states, mainly Syria. Unaware of his military ties, the internal security agency arrested the teenager on suspicion of espionage, holding him in isolation for nearly two months and later under house arrest for more than a year before all charges were dropped.

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara said Gofman failed to act to clear the teenager after his arrest and initially denied knowledge of the operation. The chairman of an advisory committee reviewing the appointment also opposed Gofman, citing concerns about his moral integrity, though other committee members supported the nomination. Netanyahu has asked the court to dismiss the petitions, arguing that responsibility for national security rests solely with the prime minister.
