The Knesset has approved a bill prohibiting police from using Skunk, a foul-smelling liquid dispersed from high-pressure water cannon trucks, against protesters. The legislation passed its third reading unanimously, marking a rare moment of cooperation between coalition and opposition lawmakers.
The measure was introduced by Members of Knesset from United Torah Judaism and received backing from members of opposition parties. Skunk has been used in the past against ultra-Orthodox demonstrators protesting military conscription, Palestinians in the West Bank, and anti-government protesters.
The chemical composition of the liquid has not been publicly disclosed, and authorities have declined to reveal its exact ingredients. Some individuals exposed to it have reported skin irritation, shortness of breath, and headaches. The substance is produced by a private Israeli company that developed the product.
