An Iraqi national accused of supporting an Iran-backed militia has been arrested and brought to the United States to face six terrorism-related charges, according to the Justice Department. Prosecutors allege that Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi was a senior member of Kata'ib Hezbollah and provided material support to the group.

Authorities say he coordinated or supported nearly 20 attacks and attempted attacks in Europe and the United States, including efforts to kill Americans on United States soil. Court documents describe bombings, arson and assaults targeting American interests abroad, as well as discussions of potential attacks in New York, California and Arizona.

Officials said he was taken into American custody overseas and later appeared before a federal judge, who ordered him detained pending trial. His defense attorney urged against a rush to judgment and raised concerns about his confinement conditions, including reported solitary confinement.
