Officials in the United States suspect that Iran is behind a cyberattack targeting systems that monitor fuel levels in storage tanks supplying gas stations in several states. According to a report, the hackers accessed online monitoring platforms that were not protected by passwords.
Authorities said the breach did not cause physical damage or alter the actual fuel supply. Instead, the attackers changed the display readings that show fuel levels, creating the appearance of disruption without affecting real inventory.
Sources familiar with the investigation noted that Iran is suspected in part because of a history of attempting similar intrusions, though they cautioned that definitive attribution may never be made. It remains unclear why the systems lacked stronger safeguards despite previous targeting, and federal agencies have not publicly commented on the matter. The incident comes as fuel prices rise amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
