A criminal complaint unsealed in a court in the United States accuses an Iraqi man of plotting attacks inside the country, raising concerns that Iran is expanding the reach of its proxy groups beyond the Middle East. Officials say the case signals a broader effort by Tehran to target Western interests far from traditional conflict zones.
The accused, Mohammad al-Saadi, is described as a senior figure in Kataib Hezbollah, an Iraqi militia backed by Iran. Prosecutors allege he was involved in planning at least 20 attacks in Europe and Canada and was preparing potential strikes in the United States, including against Jewish institutions.
Security experts say the case suggests that elements tied to Iran’s so-called Axis of Resistance are increasingly operating in Western countries. United States officials have previously accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of attempting to target critics and political figures on American soil, and the new allegations have intensified fears of a widening campaign.
