G.O.P. Supporters Back Trump, but a Third Seek a New Direction for the Party

A new New York Times and Siena College poll shows that President Trump maintains a strong hold over the Republican Party, with three-quarters of Republican and Republican-leaning voters approving of his job performance. Most want the party’s next presidential nominee to follow his lead, and his influence has helped reshape primaries and congressional maps in Republican-led states. Despite declining approval among the broader electorate, loyalty within the party remains firm.

At the same time, 37 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters say they want the party to move in a different direction, including a majority of independents who lean Republican. Divisions have emerged over the economy, tariffs, and especially foreign policy after the war with Iran drove up gas prices and inflation. While a majority support the decision to go to war, fewer believe it has been worth the cost, and opinions differ over how active the United States should be abroad and its role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The survey also found shifting attitudes on Israel, trade policy, and demographic change, particularly among younger Republicans. Concerns about Trump’s tone and rhetoric have grown modestly, though most Republicans still plan to vote for their party in upcoming elections. The results highlight both Trump’s enduring dominance and the early signs of debate over the party’s future direction.
