Iraq is struggling to balance its relationships with the United States and Iran as political tensions deepen and a new government takes shape. President Donald Trump recently welcomed the nomination of Ali Al-Zaidi as Iraq’s next prime minister, signaling Washington’s desire for renewed ties. Yet Iraq’s strategic position between the two rival powers has made it a central arena for their competition, complicating Baghdad’s efforts to assert full sovereignty.

Iran-backed armed groups, formally integrated into Iraq’s security structure through the Popular Mobilization Forces, continue to wield significant influence. The arrest of an Iraqi national accused by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of links to Kataib Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has further strained relations. Washington has suspended certain security support pending the formation of a new government, increasing pressure on Iraqi leaders to demonstrate control over all weapons in the country.

Al-Zaidi has pledged to place arms under full state authority, aiming to reassure the United States while avoiding confrontation with Tehran-aligned factions. However, key ministerial posts remain unresolved, underscoring ongoing political deadlock. Analysts say translating reform promises into action will be difficult given entrenched militia power and competing foreign interests.

Despite tensions, experts argue that Iraq remains too strategically and economically important for the United States to disengage. Energy cooperation, investment by American firms, and Washington’s influence over Iraq’s oil revenues and financial system give the United States significant leverage. While distrust may persist, both sides are expected to seek compromise rather than risk a complete rupture in relations.
