Marco Rubio India visit: Has America finally got its FOMO wake-up call?

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to New Delhi signals a shift in global power dynamics, as major economies increasingly compete for stronger ties with India. Bilateral trade between India and the United States has surged from 20 billion dollars to over 220 billion dollars in two decades, and Washington is eager to expand energy and technology sales. However, India now holds significant leverage, with multiple partners seeking deeper economic engagement.

While the United States navigated tariff disputes and geopolitical tensions, India advanced major trade agreements with the European Union and the United Kingdom, and signed new deals with Oman while negotiating with several other countries. With its vast population, expanding manufacturing base, technological expertise, and rapidly growing consumer market, India has become an essential economic partner. Its reputation for honoring agreements has further strengthened its global standing.

Despite growing cooperation, tensions remain. The United States imposed steep tariffs on Indian exports in 2025 and criticized India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Diplomatic friction also surfaced after India conducted a military strike against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, with New Delhi firmly rejecting claims of foreign mediation. These developments have reinforced India’s strategy of maintaining strategic autonomy while diversifying partnerships.

Rubio has described the India–United States relationship as the defining partnership of the twenty first century. Yet India continues to negotiate from a position of strength, engaging with Washington while preserving its sovereignty. As global powers line up to deepen economic ties, India’s influence rests not only on its market size, but on the trust and reliability it projects in an uncertain world.
