Activists detained after attempting to breach Israel's maritime blockade of Gaza have alleged they were subjected to abuse while in custody. More than 50 boats in the Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey carrying food and medical aid before Israeli forces intercepted them west of Cyprus. The detainees were transferred to Israeli vessels and later taken to a prison after arriving at the port of Ashdod.
Organisers of the flotilla and several foreign officials reported allegations including physical assaults, injuries, and sexual violence. Canada’s foreign minister said her government had received information detailing appalling abuse of Canadian detainees and called for accountability. German and Spanish officials also reported injuries among their nationals, with some requiring medical treatment.
Israel’s prison service rejected the claims as false and without factual basis, stating that all detainees were held in accordance with the law and provided medical care as required. The Israeli military said its orders require respectful and appropriate treatment of flotilla participants and that any specific complaints would be thoroughly examined. The allegations have not been independently verified.
