Seven British activists detained after Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla bound for Gaza have returned to the United Kingdom, alleging mistreatment while in custody. The boats, which departed from Turkey carrying a symbolic amount of aid, were stopped west of Cyprus and taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod before passengers were transferred to prison facilities.
Organisers of the flotilla claim detainees faced abuse, including allegations of sexual assault and physical violence. Several activists described being handcuffed tightly, beaten and denied medical care, with one saying he feared he had suffered a serious spinal injury. Another participant said their belongings were discarded and that they were forced to wear prison clothing.
Israeli authorities have rejected the allegations, stating that detainees were treated lawfully and in accordance with military procedures requiring respectful conduct. Officials also described the flotilla as a publicity stunt and said there was little humanitarian aid on board. The claims of abuse have not been independently verified.
