US expresses regret on failure to get consensus in NPT Treaty

The United States expressed deep regret after countries participating in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference failed to reach consensus on a final document at the 2026 meeting in New York. Washington criticized what it described as the unwillingness of some states to address Iran’s nuclear activities and its noncompliance with required safeguards under the International Atomic Energy Agency.

American officials said that ignoring such violations undermines the enforcement and accountability mechanisms at the core of the treaty. Tensions between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program contributed to the deadlock, marking the third consecutive review conference in sixteen years to end without an agreed outcome.

United Nations officials warned that the repeated failures threaten the credibility and future health of the treaty at a time of rising global tensions and nuclear risks. Separately, the United States reaffirmed its support for the legitimate government of Lebanon, condemning Hizballah’s actions as destabilizing and pledging continued backing for Lebanon’s recovery and stability.
