United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has accused Hezbollah of attempting to push Lebanon 'back into chaos' by calling for the overthrow of the country’s democratically elected government. Rubio said the group’s threats of violence would not be allowed to succeed and described its actions as reckless and destructive.
The remarks came after Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem urged citizens to take to the streets in response to Israeli strikes and sanctions targeting Al Qard Al Hassan, a financial institution affiliated with the group. Qassem said the measures harmed hundreds of thousands of low income people who rely on the institution for interest free loans during Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis.
Tensions remain high despite a ceasefire that took effect in April and has since been extended. Israel continues to carry out strikes against what it calls Hezbollah targets, while Hezbollah maintains attacks in southern Lebanon. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, including negotiations involving Iran and discussions between Lebanon and Israel scheduled to continue in early June.
