Shelly Kittleson, a freelance journalist with more than 15 years of experience reporting on the Middle East, was kidnapped in Baghdad on Tuesday, according to Iraqi officials. She has contributed to several international outlets and is known for her coverage of regional affairs.
Iraqi security officials said the abduction took place on Saadoun Street in central Baghdad and involved two vehicles that later headed toward Babil province. One suspect has been arrested after a pursuit that ended with one vehicle crashing near Al Haswa, while the other car carrying Kittleson escaped. Security forces have launched operations based on what they described as precise intelligence to locate her and those responsible.
The United States State Department said it is aware of the incident and emphasized that the safety of Americans is its highest priority. A senior official stated that authorities had previously warned Kittleson of threats and are coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to secure her release. Al Monitor, a publication she contributed to, said it is deeply alarmed and called for her safe and immediate return.
