$1bn, a bride or a breakup: Uganda general's bizarre ultimatum to Turkey

Uganda's army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba has triggered a diplomatic storm after demanding 1 billion dollars from Turkey along with what he called 'the most beautiful woman' in the country, threatening to cut diplomatic ties if his demands are not met within 30 days. In a series of social media posts later deleted, he said the money should serve as a security dividend for Uganda's long military involvement in Somalia, where its troops have fought the militant group Al-Shabab.

Kainerugaba warned that failure to comply could result in the closure of Turkey's embassy in Kampala and reciprocal measures against Uganda's embassy, as well as restrictions on the national airline of Turkey. He accused Ankara of benefiting from contracts and operations in Mogadishu while Uganda carried the security burden over nearly two decades. He also advised Ugandans against traveling to Turkey and voiced support for Israel, offering to deploy thousands of Ugandan soldiers there.

The general, who is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, has previously sparked controversy with similar remarks involving foreign governments, prompting official apologies and diplomatic strain. There has been no immediate response from Turkish or Somali authorities, and Ugandan officials have not clarified whether the latest comments reflect government policy or his personal views.
