Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with the United States in Pakistan ended without agreement despite what he described as Iran's good faith efforts. He claimed negotiations were close to producing an understanding referred to as the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, but were derailed by what he called maximalist demands and shifting positions from the American side.
United States Vice President JD Vance said the discussions concluded after 21 hours because Iran refused to accept Washington's terms. He stated that the United States had clearly outlined its red lines, including a demand for a firm commitment from Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons or the capabilities to rapidly develop them.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf also said the United States failed to build trust during the negotiations. He noted that Iran had presented forward-looking proposals but ultimately remained unconvinced, adding that it is now up to the United States to decide whether it can establish the trust necessary for future progress.
