A rare wild ass foal has been born at the Ramat Gan Safari, offering a hopeful sign for a species that is rapidly disappearing in the wild. It is estimated that only a few hundred wild asses remain in their natural habitats of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia.

The wild ass, a small and distinctive wild horse considered the ancestor of the domestic donkey, is highly adapted to extreme desert environments. Despite this resilience, it faces severe threats including hunting, habitat loss, and intense competition with livestock for limited water and food sources.

Human activity continues to drive the species toward extinction, as expanding settlements encroach on its habitat and hunting persists for food and traditional medicine. These pressures have significantly reduced the remaining wild population, making each new birth an important milestone for conservation efforts.
