Google is introducing a major change to its Chrome browser by adding official support for Vertical Tabs, a feature long offered by rival browsers. The update allows users to move their tabs to a side panel, making titles fully visible and easier to manage, especially for those who work with dozens of open pages at once. Users can enable the feature by right-clicking on the browser window and selecting 'Show Tabs Vertically'.
The move addresses a common frustration with the traditional horizontal tab layout, where tab titles shrink and disappear as more pages are opened. By shifting tabs to the side, Chrome aims to improve navigation, organization and productivity, particularly for heavy users and researchers.
Chrome is also rolling out an upgraded Reading Mode that offers a full-screen, distraction-free interface. This update comes amid growing competition from modern browsers, including those built around artificial intelligence tools, pushing Google to expand its productivity features and refine the browsing experience.
