White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said a foiled shooting at the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner marked the third major assassination attempt against President Donald Trump. The incident occurred Saturday night when an armed suspect was stopped by Secret Service agents before entering the hotel ballroom where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials were gathered.
Leavitt confirmed that White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles will convene a meeting with officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Secret Service and the White House operations team to review security measures and ensure the president’s protection. She said Trump believes existing protocols functioned as intended during the incident, though potential changes could still be considered.
Leavitt also criticized harsh political rhetoric, saying it contributes to an environment in which political violence becomes more likely. She stressed that Americans should not have to live with constant fear of such threats.
