Hundreds gather for Tel Aviv protest memorial ceremony demanding state Oct. 7 probe

Hundreds gathered at Habima Square in Tel Aviv for a protest memorial ceremony organized by relatives of victims of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. The event, held ahead of Israel's official Memorial Day, called for the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the security failures surrounding the assault.

The ceremony featured speeches from relatives of Israelis who were abducted to Gaza and later killed in captivity. Organizers displayed the names of dozens of soldiers killed since the attack, while candles arranged in the shape of the date 7.10 commemorated the tragedy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the formation of such a commission, arguing that its judicial leadership would be biased against him amid his ongoing corruption trial and disputes over judicial reforms. Protesters accused the government of prolonging the war for political reasons, framing the memorial under the title Yishkach, a wordplay contrasting with the traditional Memorial Day prayer Yizkor.
