A 25-year-old reservist from Samaria has been released after six days in custody following his arrest by the Israel Security Agency. He had been detained on suspicion of involvement in the killing of a Palestinian man near the village of Qusra. The Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court rejected a request by police and the security agency to extend his detention and ordered his release to three days of house arrest.
The reservist was allowed to meet with his attorney for the first time shortly before the court hearing, after an earlier order preventing such a meeting was lifted. His lawyer criticized the use of severe detention measures against a serving soldier and expressed hope that lessons would be learned from the case.
The incident under investigation occurred about a month ago after Jewish shepherds were reportedly attacked in the area. Security forces were dispatched, and during the confrontation a Palestinian operative affiliated with an armed group was killed. The man had previously been linked to a violent attack on Israeli teenagers, and the armed group later issued an official mourning notice following his death.
